Attorney Judd Kessler, who is Abacus Data Systems CEO, discusses something many lawyers need help with – avoiding attorney burnout. Here are 3 easy ways Judd suggests to help “combat the deadly signs of attorney burnout”.
Is this you?
- Are you making way too many mistakes?
- Is your concentration shot?
- Is drudgery and the daily grind taking over your practice?
The article goes on to say “Don’t despair!” If you’re feeling the fatigue and frustration of attorney burnout, you’re certainly not alone.
What are some concrete steps you can implement to avoid burnout starting now?
-
1. Get Smart! Examine your goals and get them together. If you’re feeling burned out, chances are it’s time to review your professional and personal goals. Make a list (of all the relevant things that matter to you): family, finance, career, spiritual and personal. Then list 3-5 priorities for each category, and make sure you follow through! Take time every week to go through your goals and review your priorities. Get your practice in sync with what you really want, and say good-bye to attorney burnout!
2. Make Slack! Law practice takes brain power, and you need time to develop your best creative work/thinking. Put some slack and down time back into your schedule and boost your creative side!
3. Use Law Office Management Technology! It’s easier than you think! Practice control software is designed to simplify, organize, and control your practice, so you can concentrate on practicing law. Streamline your work and get your files, documents, calendar, and contacts under control. The best practice management software is easy to use (AbacusLaw installs in just 1 minute) and yet powerful enough to organize every aspect of your practice. Control your practice in just a few clicks!
When your law practice is under control and running smoothly, your peace of mind will return. “And, like magic, burnout is a thing of the past.”

Some great tips — but avoiding attorney burnout (which I call “Lawyer Meltdown”) also means asking for help. Setting and reviewing your goals are a fantastic start, but in my experience, the problem comes at the implementation stage. If you don’t share your goals with someone and create some accountability around them, it’s too easy for ‘real life’ to get in the way. By working with a colleague, partner or coach, setting deadlines, letting others know your intentions and asking them to help keep you accountable for reaching them, you won’t fall back into old habits and return to feeling overwhelmed.
